How to Reach Gangtok

By Air:
Gangtok is well connected by air to major Indian cities. The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal, around 124 kilometers from Gangtok. Picturesque mountains and flowing rivers accompany the scenic 4-5 hour drive from the airport to Gangtok. Private cabs can be rented at the airport. Alternatively, for a more adventurous option, you can book a seat on a TSA helicopter for a 20-minute journey to Gangtok, subject to weather conditions and availability.
The exciting news is that Sikkim now has its airport, Pakyong Airport, which will offer direct connectivity to major cities once fully operational. Currently, only a few flights operate from here. Located in Pakyong village, approximately 35 km south of Gangtok, it is Sikkim's first airport, at 4,590 ft. Once operational, it will significantly reduce travel time to Gangtok.
By Train:
The New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri, West Bengal, is the most prominent railway station near Gangtok. The station is only 148 kilometers away from Gangtok. New Jalpaiguri has excellent rail connectivity with major cities like Kolkata and New Delhi. Taxis or cabs can easily be found from New Jalpaiguri for the 4-5 hour journey to Gangtok. State-run buses are also available but may take slightly longer (around 6-7 hours).
By Road:
Gangtok is well connected to other cities and destinations by road. The roads are generally in good condition, except for specific areas. Travelers from Kolkata, Kalimpong, Siliguri, and Darjeeling often prefer driving to Gangtok. Private jeeps, buses, and taxis can be hired from Siliguri and Bagdogra. State-run buses also provide connectivity between Gangtok and Siliguri in West Bengal.
