SIGHTSEEING DESTINATIONS IN RINCHENPONG:
Rinchenpong is renowned for its scenic beauty and magnificent views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. The town is closer to the Kanchenjunga range, providing excellent views of the Kanchenjunga peaks and the surrounding mountains, including Mt. Narsing.
Rinchenpong Monastery:
The town boasts two monasteries, with the Gurung Monastery or Rishum Monastery being an 18th-century structure near Rinchenpong at around 6250 ft. Set atop a ridge, the monastery offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and makes for a fantastic spot for capturing photographs of the mountains on a sunny morning. Adjacent to the monastery, a park commemorates the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore.
The other monastery, located on higher ground, can be reached through a forested trail near the main Rinchenpong market. An intriguing and beautiful statue of Lord Buddha, known as the Atibuddha statue, awaits visitors. This monastery, built in 1730, is the third oldest in Sikkim.
Poison Lake:
Not far from Rinchenpong Monastery, Poison Lake can be reached by a short hike. The ruins of a British bungalow nearby now accompany the dry lake. With significant historical importance, locals believe that during the British invasion, the lake was poisoned as it served as a crucial water source for the British forces.
Chayatal Lake:
This small lake, teeming with fish, is a popular tourist sightseeing spot. Its tranquil surroundings offer fantastic mountain range views, making it a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts.
